A Very Active Time in the SharePoint
Community
Letter from William Rogers, President & CEO,
CorasWorks Corporation
The last four months have been incredibly
active for those of us in the Microsoft and
SharePoint community. Kicking off this
period was Office Devcon in March, with
MSD2D’s first SharePoint Connections
Conference following shortly thereafter in
April. Then in May, we experienced
Microsoft’s Global SharePoint Conference,
and the Spring rounded out, just last week
in Boston, with the Microsoft TechEd
Conference. And if the information presented
at all these events wasn’t enough, we were
further excited by the Beta 2 releases for
Office 2007 and Windows Vista.
So what does all this activity mean?
To help you digest this very broad set of
technologies over the next few months,
CorasWorks will increase its focus on
clearly demonstrating a)
where you can get with these technologies
and b) what incremental paths are available
to you to move forward. This
newsletter will begin the process by
focusing on design options, in particular,
the migration to enterprise-wide application
design. In addition, we will discuss the
positive impact on business value that you
should expect as you progress forward in the
context of CorasWorks on SharePoint.

Going Beyond Site-Bound Application
Design with SharePoint 2007
Team sites are the core application
design element with SharePoint 2003.
Their ease of use and flexibility has
driven strong adoption amongst users and
organizations. Yet, the potential for
business applications that leverage the
new Office SharePoint 2007 capabilities
is often limited by the inclination of
SharePoint designers to utilize
site-bound design. As the SharePoint
Portal Server architecture of areas and
sub-areas is migrated to team sites on
SharePoint 2007, there is an additional
risk of designs becoming even more “site
bound.” In this article, we’ll discuss
different types of “enterprise-wide”
application designs that offer the
opportunity for greater business impact,
which we believe will become more
prevalent in the SharePoint 2007 era.

Enterprise-wide Program Management in
SharePoint: the Means to Manage
One of the most exciting examples within the
new CorasWorks Showroom for SharePoint 2007
is the CorasWorks Program Management Office
(PMO) application. It addresses a rather
familiar application scenario by utilizing
some novel capabilities that transform an
enterprise-wide implementation of
disconnected project sites into an easily
managed, distributed application that cuts
across a whole SharePoint environment.

Bringing It All Together... An
Inter-Connected Customer-Sales-Partner (“CSP”)
Workplace
on SharePoint
Another application in the CorasWorks
Showroom on SharePoint 2007 is the new
Customer-Sales-Partner (CSP) Workplace. In
the showroom, it appears to be three
separate portal applications. Yet it is
actually a single application that
represents a new class of enterprise-wide
applications within the SharePoint
environment. This application differs from
the PMO application in four important ways:
- It integrates three portals (Customer,
Sales, and Partner) into a single
application called a “workplace”
- It demonstrates the integration of the
three different “zones” of Internet,
Intranet, and Extranet into a single system
- It introduces the idea of a “workstream”
that functions as a top layer of business
process that runs across the environment
- It shows the integration of three new
capabilities of Microsoft Office SharePoint
Server 2007: Workflow, Forms Server, and the
Business Data Catalog
